Grants and Scholarships are forms of assistance that students do not have to pay back under normal circumstances. These funds can come from any number of Federal, State, and private sources, and are obtained in different ways. Some require the filing of a FAFSA and meeting certain requirements (Pell Grant, SEOG, State Scholarships). Many private scholarships require separate applications for consideration.
Aid Based on Financial Need
Pell Grants are awarded to financially needy undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor’s or professional degree (a professional degree would include a degree in a field such as pharmacy or dentistry). For many students, Pell Grants provide a foundation for financial aid to which other aid may be added. Assuming the Federal Government approves the budget, the maximum Pell Grant for the 2024-2025 award year is $7,395. The amount of Pell Grant a student receives is determined by:
- the Student Aid Index (SAI) as calculated using information provided on the FAFSA,
- the cost of attendance, and
- enrollment status (full-time or part-time).
Federal Pell Grants are applied directly to student’s bills with the Student Accounts Office each semester.
For more information about this program, visit Federal Student Aid, an Office of the U.S. Department of Education.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) are awarded undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. UMF gives priority for SEOG funds to on-time financial aid applicants who receive Pell Grants. The maximum SEOG award at UMF is $4,000 for the 2024-2025 Academic Year.
For more information about this program, consult this website: studentaid.ed.gov
Need-based University Scholarships are awarded to on-time financial aid applicants who demonstrate financial need, as determined using the information provided on the FAFSA. Award amounts vary depending on financial need.
The Maine State Grant (MSG) Program provides scholarships to Maine residents pursuing education beyond high school. At UMF, the maximum MSG award for a full-time student at UMF is $2,500 per academic year. To apply for a Maine State Grant, a student must mail a completed FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA so that it is received by the Federal processor by May 1. To be eligible for a Maine State Grant, a student must:
- be a Maine resident for at least one year prior to application,
- have graduated from an approved secondary school or received a GED,
- be enrolled in an eligible school for a first undergraduate degree,
- have financial need, as determined by information provided on the FAFSA, and
- must meet general Federal requirements for student financial assistance.
For more specific information regarding Maine State Grants and other educational assistance programs offered by the state, contact the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) at 800-228-3734 (within Maine) or 207-623-3263. Students from other states are advised to contact their state education agency for information about their education assistance programs.
