University of Maine at Farmington graduate programs are designed to encourage application of theory, and reflection on practice in the field. Our graduate programs are committed to ensuring educational leaders are committed to equitable outcomes for all children and families. Through course delivery and course content all educational leaders are expected to learn, practice, and model digital age teaching and learning.

Caring Teachers

Educational leaders are caring teachers who understand the variety of factors that influence educational experiences. They are reflective in practice and examine the educational experience from the perspective of students, teachers, families and communities. Diversity is defined as differences among groups of people and individuals based on ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, gender, abilities, language, religion, sexual orientation, and geographical area. Leaders seek and honor a wide diversity of voices in order to create change in a climate of respect.

They:

  • Examine educational cultures from multiple perspectives
  • Create shared visions for teaching and learning; build mutually beneficial partnerships, and engage with colleagues, families, and communities to address educational needs
  • Use knowledge of child and adult development to create respectful, inclusive, supportive, and challenging learning environments

Competent Educators

Educational leaders are competent educators who understand the dialogic relationship between theory and practice. They challenge themselves and others to support innovation and promote best educational practices.

They:

  • Translate theories of learning into practices that demonstrate cultural competence and values of inclusive education
  • Design and differentiate curriculum, instruction, and assessment for all learners
  • Leverage digital tools to support teaching and learning
  • Investigate practices through engagement with educational research
  • Challenge themselves and colleagues to expand and enrich their professional development

Collaborative Professional Leaders

Educational leaders are collaborative professional leaders who understand that cultivating professional growth is essential practice. Leaders foster dialogue and support collaborative forums for reflection, learning, and innovation. Collaborative professional leaders articulate their vision and create positive change.

They:

  • Communicate effectively with diverse audiences
  • Demonstrate leadership skills of strategic thinking, collaboration, consensus building, and the ability to create change while sustaining effective practices
  • Understand politics and organizations and advocate for students, colleagues, and the profession
  • Create positive outcomes for children, families, and the profession while sustaining evidence-based practices
  • Incorporate ethical practices into a reflective and responsible leadership style
