Health Insurance

The University of Maine System, of which UMF is a member, no longer requires students to provide proof of health insurance.

Please note: Some students may still be required to carry health insurance (i.e. Graduate Assistants intercollegiate athletes, and International students).

Navigating Your Insurance Options
Several options are available that will allow you to purchase health insurance that meets your individual needs. If you are interested in any of these options, we recommend you immediately begin the process of shopping for and securing healthcare coverage.

Financial Aid

Eligibility for Graduate Students

In order to qualify for financial aid, you need to be admitted into a Master’s Degree Program. Students enrolled as non-degree students, including those in the SPARC Program, or students in UMF certificate programs are not eligible for financial aid. There may be some private loans available for non-degree students – check with the Financial Aid Office for more information about private loans.

Master of Science in Education Programs and Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology with an Emphasis in Creative Arts
Limited financial aid is available to graduate students matriculated in one of these graduate programs. You may apply for Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans or loans through qualified private sources. Submission of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be made to receive a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan. Three credits is considered full-time for graduate programs and qualifies matriculated students to be considered for loans.

For more information, contact the UMF Financial Aid Office through the UMF Merrill Center Student Services: 207-778-7100. A student receiving financial aid must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements. Please consult the Graduate Catalog for the full policy and guidelines.

Course Drop / Withdrawal Policies

  • You may drop a UMF course (or withdraw from the University of Maine System) by contacting the UMF Merrill Center Student Services: 207-778-7100 or at umf.registrar@maine.edu.
  • The date you contact the UMF Merrill Center Student Services regarding your intent to drop a course or withdraw will determine your financial adjustment, if any.
