A Sample Internship Query to Send via E-mail
Dear Mr. Jamison,
My name is Bill LaFontaine, and I am a senior psychology major at the University of Maine at Farmington. I will be relocating the Summit County area of Colorado in January 2005 and am interested in pursuing a counseling oriented internship with the guidance counseling office at Summit County High School from January to May.
As you can see from the enclosed resume, my work as a Behavioral Specialist-I for Atlantic Home Health Services involves support for a high school-aged boy with Bi-polar disorder, ADHD, and Detachment Disorder. With training in behavior modification, I help my client deal with everyday stress, conflict resolution, and anger management. I also model responsible behavior, convey empathy, and help him understand boundaries in functional relationships. To help my client with socialization, I identified community service work for him to complete at a soup kitchen, where we work together weekly. The social interaction and community service have helped improve his self-esteem and self-worth. My supervision involves twice-monthly meetings with a clinical social worker to review the individual service plan and discuss effective strategies. This experience has given my insight on the clinical aspects of assessment and the impact on families.
I also have taken several counseling courses, including Crisis Intervention and Stabilization (PSY 455), Psychotherapeutic Methods (PSY 435), Group Psychotherapy (PSY 360), and Child Counseling and Psychopathology (PSY 339). I have also taken Addiction Rehabilitation through UMF’s Rehabilitation Services program.
I have been interested in moving from theory to practice whenever possible and would like to supplement my course work and work experience with a school-based counseling internship. If given the opportunity to complete an internship at Summit County High School, I would like to run a study-skills support group for academically at-risk students. I am also interested in helping to run groups related to developing assertiveness and assisting with career development appointments. Of course, I am open to meet any critical staffing needs you have.
Thank you for considering my interest in serving an internship with your school. I will call you by October 15 to discuss the possibility of serving the faculty and students at Summit County High School as a counseling intern.
Sincerely,
Bill LaFontaine
