Launching in Winter Term, December 2024, the University of Maine at Farmington will offer a new online interdisciplinary bachelor’s degree program in Public Policy.

A degree in Public Policy prepares you to analyze policy problems and develop, evaluate, and implement solutions at the local, state, and federal levels.

This program is available in a flexible fully online format that accommodates your busy schedule. You take the classes when it’s convenient for you.

Courses will also be offered fully online and in a blended format (a combination of online + in-person) for students attending UMF.

This program is ideal for those working for local government entities across Maine and who are interested in enhancing their knowledge of policymaking and advancing their careers. It can also prepare those interested in careers in public service, business, communications, government, and more.

The UMF Public Policy program is being offered in partnership with the Maine Municipal Association.

You’ll work with expert faculty in core courses on public policy, policy analysis, and statistical methods. Later, you’ll branch out into areas directly connected to your policy interests — ranging from globalization, health care, education, gender and development, human rights, climate change, environmental policy in general, and beyond.

What is public policy?

The field of public policy spans various disciplines, connecting any discipline’s focus with the laws, policies, and institutional framework surrounding that particular focus. Someone entering the world of public policy benefits from a broad knowledge of policy issues, and specific information about how agencies operate.

In addition to connecting you with different academic disciplines across the Farmington campus, some Public Policy courses will be taught online at other University of Maine System campuses.

What can I do with a degree in Public Policy?

Data comes from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and other sources. Median Salaries for positions in Maine typically fall below those of other New England states.
