The University of Maine at Farmington Psychology program offers a nurturing academic environment where you can explore the field of psychology, develop long-term mentoring relationships with faculty, and deepen your understanding of yourself and others.
In addition to your classwork, you’ll be encouraged to gain real-world, hands-on experience in research and practice through internships, independent study, service-learning, and practica.
For example, students enrolled in the Positive Psychology course are expected to keep a gratitude journal, an activity allowing them to experience first-hand the benefits of reflecting on the various “gifts” they have received in their lives. Students in the Death & Dying course prepare their own obituary, which compels them to reflect on how they would like to be remembered.
The Psychology program here really confirmed what I want to do for a profession. I learned so much and gained so much self-confidence — my Psych professors played a huge role in that.
My senior capstone research project was truly grad school-level work and in my Symposium Day presentation, I was able to explain how I conducted my research, why I designed the survey the way I did, and what the results meant.
Presenting and defending my work to a roomful of fellow students and professors was a little scary but I aced it! That was such a valuable experience and it gives me the confidence to go for a Master’s degree in Psychology.

The UMF Psychology program values a sense of community among students and faculty where collaborations on research and other scholarly projects are a high priority. Students regularly present at regional and national conferences and engage in self-designed research projects mentored by UMF psychology faculty.
A unique sequence of courses in Psychology will help prepare you for a career as a clinical psychologist, school psychologist, crisis response worker, abuse/case management counselor, residential support worker, research assistant, legal assistant, and other careers.
Graduates of the UMF Psychology program have also gone on to advanced study in psychology, social work, counseling, law, medicine, nursing, and business.

Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician / Community (MHRT/C) Certification
Students in UMF’s Psychology program are also eligible to receive Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician / Community (MHRT/C) certification from Maine. While UMF does not provide this state certification, our coursework prepares you for the certification.
MHRT/Community (MHRT/C) certification is the most widely needed certification in Maine. It’s required for mental health crisis workers, case managers or community support workers, day treatment workers, and independent living specialists, children’s case managers, and home-based family services staff.
Your UMF academic advisor in Psychology can guide you through the coursework needed for the state MHRT/C certification.
