John Harlow: Take Only What You Can Carry

The UMF Art Gallery proudly presents ‘Take Only What You Can Carry,” a real-life photographic exhibit by John Harlow, UMF Art and New Media alumni. The exhibit is on display from Thursday, Feb. 6 through March 28.

Harlow’s work in photography and video conveys intimate, raw documents of family life, domestic spaces, and personal chaos. Inspired by conversations and encounters in his photowalks through  poor and working-class neighborhoods of his hometown of Skowhegan, His work  is deeply human, combining elements of documentary photography with a painterly sensibility that invites viewers to confront discomfort, beauty, and vulnerability all at once.

Location: UMF Art Gallery. FREE. Open to the Public. The UMF Art Gallery is dedicated to bringing contemporary art to the campus and regional communities. The gallery is located at 246 Main Street, behind the Admissions Office.

Gallery hours are Tuesdays-Sundays 12-4 p.m., and by appointment. Please contact Sarah at maline@maine.edu or 207-778-1062 for more information or to make an appointment. https://www.artgalleryumf.org/

Live Music with Liam Grant & Glenn Jones

Emery Community Arts Center welcomes guitarists Liam Grant and Glenn Jones for a concert on Saturday, April 5th at 7:00pm in Emery’s performance space. Liam Grant is a New England guitarist with a punk ethos, cut from the American Primitive cloth. The restless guitar explorations, modal epics, and driving up-tempo rags recall the likes of Grant's pedagogue; Takoma Records, and the path that was paved by his forebears John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Peter Walker, Max Ochs and later Glenn Jones, Steffen Basho-Junghans, Jack Rose, and others. Glenn Jones is a veteran guitarist from the cult post-rock ensemble CUL DE SAC and innovative fingerpicker who has spent the last two decades cultivating an idiosyncratic vernacular for guitar and banjo across ten critically acclaimed solo albums. Steeped in both American Primitive guitar music as well as rock and experimental music, Jones creates rich sonic tapestries with a distinct and stirring voice.Location: Emery Community Arts Center. FREE. Open to the Public. Sponsored by: Emery Community Arts Center. Contact: Ann Bartges, 207-778-7461, ann.bartges@maine.edu. https://wpsites.maine.edu/emerycommunityartscenter/

    UMF 2025 Commencement

We are excited to celebrate the achievements of our graduating class at this year’s Commencement Ceremony. This year’s ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the new, larger, outdoor facility, on the grounds of the Narrow Gauge Outdoor Venue, located off Front Street in Farmington near UMF's Prescott Field.

The UMF 2025 Commencement Ceremony will be a live, in-person event. The new outdoor venue offers plenty of room for students, guests, and alumni, so tickets won’t be necessary. For spectators who cannot sit outdoors, limited indoor seating and a livestream of the event will also be available inside Narrow Gauge Cinemas, next to the outdoor venue. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at the same time in the UMF Fitness & Recreation Center.
