FARMINGTON, ME (May 25, 2021)—UMF alumna, Elizabeth Bisson, was recently named Outstanding Conservation Educator of the Year by the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District, according to the Piscataquis Observer.
The PCSWCD presents an annual outstanding conservation achievement award to either a farmer, forester, landowner or educator in Piscataquis County. The award honors an individual or entity who has worked to promote or carry out significant conservation efforts in the county.
UMF alumna, Elizabeth Bisson, was recently named Outstanding Conservation Educator of the Year by the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Bisson, a pre-kindergarten teacher at SeDoMoCha Elementary School, was selected by the PCSWCD’s Board of Supervisors and staff for teaching her students to truly understand their natural world. She used the disruptions of COVID-19 to rework her curriculum to do as much learning outdoors as possible.
According to the article, Bisson’s teaching philosophy is “let the students get outside, climb, play and get dirty, their academics they need will develop along the way.” Connecting with the PCSWCD’s Educational Coordinator, Kacey Weber, they introduced the students to snowshoeing, wildlife tracks, soil and soil health, watersheds and pollution. An end of the year activity will include planting flowers, enjoying a nature-based story walk and identifying trees.
Bisson will be recognized at an outdoor school ceremony on Tuesday, May 25.
