Meet Our Faculty
At the University of Maine at Farmington, our professors are first and foremost teachers, and many are nationally-recognized experts in their fields.
In fact, UMF was recognized as a 2012 Fulbright Scholar "top producer" by the Institute of International Education and the Fulbright Program's sponsor, the U.S. Dept. of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Currently, UMF has 11 UMF faculty members who have been named Fulbright Scholars. Recipients of the prestigious Fulbright award are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.
University of Maine at Farmington Fulbright Scholars include: Asst. Professor of Anthropology Gaelyn Aguilar, Asst. Professor of Political Science Linda Beck, Assoc. Professor of English Eric Brown, Professor of Social Studies Education Rod Farmer, Asst. Professor of English Sabine Klein, Professor of Creative Writing Gretchen Legler, Assoc. Provost and Dean of Academic Services Rob Lively, Assoc. Professor of Creative Writing Jeffrey Thomson, and Asst. Professor of History Anne Marie Wolf; as well as adjunct faculty Bruce McInnis (Chorus) and Chris Brinegar (Biology). Lively and UMF Asst. Professor of Spanish Marisela Funes serve on the Board of Directors of the Fulbright Association of Maine.
The renowned Fulbright Program is designed to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." Since its inception, it has provided almost 300,000 participants – 111,000 from the U.S. – with the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. The Fulbright Program operates in 155 countries worldwide.
Caring, Accessible Mentors
Though many UMF faculty are nationally-recognized experts in their fields, they have a passion for teaching and
also take the time to get to know their students. Collaborating with students on a research project, holding office
hours to review a term paper, or chatting over a cup of coffee, UMF professors make themselves available to meet
and talk with you: before classes, between classes, and after classes. They take the time and interest to get to
know you personally — your research passions, your favorite sports teams, what bands you're listening to,
your favorite authors, and more.
Sharing ideas, debating issues, conducting research, or helping with a tricky assignment, our professors will become an active part of your life. And some will even become treasured lifelong mentors.
