Wilderness and Remote First Aid Course-Session 7

Course is on Monday & Wednesday's starting July 9 through August 1. This 26-hour course is ideal for anyone that finds themselves in the outdoors; day hikes or overnight trips where help is over 1 hour away. This course will provide a foundation of first aid principals and skills that will help participants gain the confidence needed to respond to emergencies and give care in areas that do not have immediate emergency medical services response, such as wilderness and remote environments, including urban disasters, such as earthquakes and hurricanes. Topics include, but not limited to, primary and secondary assessments, calling for help and evacuation considerations, shock, wounds and wound infection, bone and joint injuries, burns, hypothermia, heat-related illnesses, lightening, altitude illnesses, submersion incidents, and allergies and anaphylaxis. Participants will receive a handbook and reference pocket guide as well as a SAM splint. The Wilderness and Remote First Aid and Adult CPR/AED certifications are valid for 2 years. Participants must be 14 years old on or before the last session of the course. *A minimum of 8 participants is required. UMF Fitness and Recreation Center. Open to the public.

Intro to Whitewater Kayak

July 30th, 2012 - 7:00pm

Learn the basics of white water kayaking in 4, one-hour sessions in this controlled, hands on, instructional course. This course is designed to teach basic paddling strokes, edging, eddying, ferrying, peel outs, and rolls. The first three classes take place in the FRC pool and the final class will be on the river. Minimum age of 13 or if Under 13, allowed with preapproval and adult supervision. UMF Fitness and Recreation Pool. Open to the public.
