UMF students tend to be very serious about their schoolwork but they also like to have fun. They want hard questions, not easy answers. They enjoy being challenged into thinking, not being lectured to. Students here are free thinkers and free spirits, but with a practical eye toward the job market.

The student body (about 2,000 full-time students) is split 66% women - 34% men. And although our students come from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Vermont and across the northeast, around 80% are from Maine.

Does This Sound Like You?

Not Sure of a Major

About 20% of all students come to Farmington having not yet chosen a major, which is fine. Here, you don't have to decide right away. And many others switch majors after their second year.

Want to be Known as a Person, Not a Number
We limit enrollment to just 2,000 full-time students. You’ll know everyone here on a first name basis — even your professors (which is a good thing).

Seeking Financial Aid
Roughly 90% of all full-time, degree-seeking UMF students receive some form of financial assistance: scholarships, federal aid, merit scholarships, loans, institutional aid, student employment, etc.

Want to Work Closely With Real Professors
Our faculty are deeply committed to their students’ success. We know this sounds warm and fuzzy, but here it's true. Farmington professors take a genuine interest in their students’ lives and will even give you their phone number to reach them at home. (This doesn't happen at every college.)

Up for a Challenge
Farmington students thrive on challenges — in the classroom, in the field, in the labs, on the court.

Environmentally Friendly
Our campus is committed to environmental stewardship and to graduating responsible global citizens who care about our environment.

Creative
Here, creativity is not limited just to those majoring in Art, Music, Theater or Creative Writing. Our Geology, Special Ed, Business Economics students and others are also musicians, poets, DJs, Web designers, improv comics, and dancers.

Smart But Well-Rounded, Too
About 70% of our incoming students ranked in the top half of their high school class and 40% were in the top quarter of their high school class. Most had a solid B average in high school.

Crave Personal Attention
Personal attention is what Farmington is all about. Whether it’s working with classmates on a group research project or chatting with a professor over coffee, you'll get to know everyone here.

Outdoorsy
Look, if you’re into the active outdoor lifestyle, Farmington is the perfect location: snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking, skiing, kayaking and more.

Open to New Ideas
You’re OK with people who have different ideas and values. Our student clubs are proof of that: GLBTQ Alliance, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, UMF Democrats, College Republicans, Rugby Club, Computer Club, etc. Farmington students are open minded, tolerant and willing to listen to different ways of thinking.

Looking for Small, But Not Too Small
Farmington, Maine (pop. 7,500) is a storybook New England college town, with coffee shops, bookstores, funky shops, restaurants, a movie theater and more just a 3-minute stroll from campus.

Laid Back
Even our college president wears running shoes and an L.L.Bean Polar fleece jacket to work. This is not a stuffy suit-and-tie kind of college. Not at all.

Self-motivated
College life is what you make of it — no matter where you go. If you’re independent and willing to try new things you’ll fit right in at Farmington.

Comfortable With Who You Are
Here, you can really be yourself. Or you can get a fresh new start and reinvent yourself and become whoever you want to be. And who you are is OK with us — all of us.
