UMF Facts
A Nationally Recognized Public Liberal Arts College
The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) has been named a "Best College" by
U.S.News & World Report for 16 consecutive years (2013–1998).
UMF was also one of just 20 colleges and universities across the nation featured in Student Success in College: Creating Conditions That Matter, a book that identified schools that serve as models of educational effectiveness. Schools featured included the University of Maine at Farmington, the University of Michigan, the University of Kansas, George Mason University, Gonzaga University, among others. (UMF and Wheaton College in Massachusetts were the only New England colleges profiled in the book.)
Nationally Recognized as a Great College Value
The University of Maine at Farmington was recognized in 2013 and 2012 by U.S.News as one of its "Great Schools at
Great Prices." According to U.S.News, the higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the
better the deal. UMF, Bowdoin, Bates and Colby colleges were the only Maine schools named to the list.
Maine's Premier Teacher Preparation School
UMF is one of only three nationally accredited teacher education programs in Maine. Our graduates are well-prepared teachers because they
have a strong foundation in the arts and sciences; a deep understanding of the learner, the learning process and effective teaching
practices; and a great deal of classroom experience beginning in their first or second year of the program. In fact, four of the past
five Maine "Teacher of the Year" recipients have been UMF Education graduates (2013, 2011, 2010, 2009). And UMF graduates
have been named Teacher of the Year in other states as well (N.H., Vt., to name a few).
Outstanding Faculty
UMF was recognized as a 2012 Fulbright Scholar "top producer" by the Institute of International
Education and the Fulbright Program's sponsor, the U.S. Dept. of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural
Affairs. Currently, UMF has 11 UMF faculty members who have been named Fulbright Scholars. Recipients of the
prestigious Fulbright award are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as
demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.
Comfortable Number of Students
The University of Maine at Farmington purposely limits its full-time enrollment to just 2,000 students.
This ensures you’ll get personal attention, small classes and a great student-to-faculty ratio. You'll get to
know everyone here and everyone will know you.
Small, Personal Classes
Our average classroom size is pretty small, only about 19 students per classroom, which encourages close student
and professor interaction and collaboration. And we do not use grad students to teach our classes.
Men and Women
Our student body is split about 66% women / 34% men.
Snow
Of course. Around here we LIVE for snow. Farmington is in ski country, after all. We're closer to more
world-class ski areas (Sugarloaf, Sunday River and Saddleback) than any college in Maine. If you ride or ski,
there's no better place to be.
Wireless Computing
UMF went wireless years before it was cool. Here, you'll have fast wireless Internet access everywhere on
campus, in every building and outdoors: residence hall rooms, inside the library, outside the library, in the
cafeteria, in classrooms, in the gym, in the Art Gallery, on the campus green, and of course in the Computer
Center — not just in certain academic buildings like some colleges do. Everywhere.
School Mascot
The Beaver (genus Castor). Yes, the furry, bucktoothed, paddle-tailed rodent is our school mascot
and namesake of our athletics teams.
From Maine & Beyond
Although our students come from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Vermont and across the
northeast, around 80% are from Maine.
School Colors
Maroon and White. Although UMF is also known for being quite "Green," as in
environmentally-friendly.
Campus Vibe
The University of Maine at Farmington is a close-knit, laid-back, accepting kind of place. We take our
academics – not ourselves – seriously.
Accredited
The University of Maine at Farmington is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges
(NEASC) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Close Student-to-Faculty Ratio
Around 14-to-1. You’ll get to know your profs and they’ll get to know you. (This is a good thing.)
Good Eats
Managed by industry leader ARAMARK, UMF's on-campus dining services is simply outstanding. Special "festive
meals," gluten-free and vegan options, home-style classics, made-to-order offerings and different meal plan
options are some of the things that set our campus dining experience apart.
Financial Aid
Approximately 90% of all full-time, degree-seeking UMF students receive some form of financial assistance:
scholarships, federal aid, merit scholarships, loans, institutional aid, student employment, etc., and our
Financial Aid Office staff has been recognized as one of the best in Maine.
